The Lorraine Hansberry Statue
"Don’t get up. Just sit a while and think. Never be afraid to sit a while and think."
— Lorraine Hansberry
The Lillys are thrilled to embark on an exciting new initiative that celebrates one of America’s greatest playwrights.
We are fundraising to erect a statue of the Great American Playwright Lorraine Hansberry, author of A Raisin in the Sun, in New York City. She will be seated under her quote, ‘Never be afraid to sit awhile and think’, with a space beside her for the public to do just that.
Executive Director Julia Jordan and Lilly Board Member Lynn Nottage are heading up this initiative, with help from NYC’s Arterventions program, which put up the Fearless Girl on Wall Street. We feel it is necessary that the commission for the statue’s design and creation be given to a woman of color, and hope that this opportunity will be a career-making one for the artist.
When the statue of Lorraine Hansberry graces the landscape of NYC, it will be only the sixth monument of a woman in our city who was not a fictional character. We hope there will soon be many more.
